Seven Ways To A Joyous Day

7 Ways to a Joyous Day
A best-selling author's best advice7 Ways to a Joyous Dayby Max Lucado, San Antonio, Texas

Ever have one of those bad days? You know—not kind of bad, but bad. You mess up at work. You have a terrible fight with your spouse. Your doctor calls you in for some tests that sound pretty scary. A day seemingly beyond all redemption. When you have a day like that (and let’s face it, we all do sometimes), you have several choices. You can retreat into paralyzing fear, act out inappropriately or just go into complete denial.

But there’s actually another choice: You can rejoice.Rejoice? Why? you ask.Because it’s the only real way out. “This is the day the Lord has made,” the psalmist tells us. “We will rejoice and be glad in it.” This day? This messy, painful, frustrating day deserves a chance? Yes. Every day, whether it includes a lost wallet, a dented bumper or the funeral of a loved one, deserves our full presence. They all come from God’s drawing room.Still not convinced? Try these seven strategies the next time you find yourself trapped in a day that holds more than you think you can bear. You’ll be surprised at how freeing they are.

Fret Not......Anxiety will ruin your day. And it can be a real confidence-killer. I know. I get plenty of opportunities to fret: Was I too long-winded in my talk? Is my latest book any good? Do I have any business telling people how to live? The drumbeat of worry can be deafening.I like the approach of a friend who once told me, “Well, Max, I always assume everyone likes me.”What a crazy idea, I thought. But I decided to give it a try—not just once, but to make it a regular thought habit. I started by giving myself and my audience the benefit of the doubt: We’re all here because we’re comfortable with one another. That habit has changed how I view the world. It’s not such a menacing place anymore. You can’t add one more day to your life or more life to your day by fretting. Worry doesn’t take away tomorrow’s troubles; it only rids today of its strength. And why should you worry when you are surrounded by friends wherever you go?

Forgive Freely.....I forgive easily. Or so I like to think. But some years ago a Christian leader publicly criticized me without giving me a chance to defend myself. This leader was offended by something I’d said on my radio show, misinterpreting my words, I thought. He wrote an article about me, inferring untrue things. I was angry and hurt. Really hurt.I moped for a few weeks, until I realized I was letting this man’s accusations rob me of joy. So I wrote him a letter, telling him how I felt. He never wrote back. Maybe he never got my letter. I don’t know. But what I realized was that by writing that letter, I forgave him. Forgiveness is not about saying that what a person did is okay or that they’re right. It’s about making a decision, a choice to let the hurt and anger go. It frees you up to move on. Forgive someone and you’ll discover that that person has virtually no power to hurt you anymore. Then you’ll be able to focus on what you really care about: the joy of life.Fear Not Heart trouble runs in my family. Mom, Dad and my older brother have all had heart problems. I was so scared about having a heart attack, I became an exercise fanatic. I’m taking care of my health, I told myself, gritting my teeth. I even trained for the grueling half-Ironman triathlon. That should fix things. Then about a year ago my cardiologist told me that I would probably still need to have heart surgery. All those miles of jogging and skipping desserts and stressing about my health, and my heart was no better off than it was before!I’m not saying that exercise is bad. In fact, it’s very good for you. I still run. My mistake was to think that I could run from my fears.Fear is a joy-killer. It can make me stressed out, short-tempered, unhappy. What’s the opposite of fear?

Trust...... I do better when I trust in God—and go for a short jog. He’s in control of my life.Place your fear in God’s hands and you’ll find that you have greater peace each day.

Live Passionately.....I was a senior in high school when I made one of the most important discoveries of my life—I loved to write. My English teacher assigned us to write a short story. The whole class groaned, but inwardly I thought, Yes! I wrote that first story through the night. It wasn’t very good. But it was a great effort. And from then on in my career and in my life I’ve always looked for opportunities to write. Writing is something I do from the soul.Discover your passions by looking back over your life for those sweet-spot moments where you’ve had ‘Yes! experiences. String those together, and you’ll begin to see new possibilities for your life.Nothing gives the day greater joy than a good wallop of passion that comes from doing something from the soul.

Get Over It!.......Sometimes I’ll have a bad day just by waking up on the proverbial wrong side of the bed. I don’t know why I’m grouchy, but I stay that way for the rest of the day.If you look long enough and hard enough, you’ll find something to bellyache about. So quit looking! If you have health problems like I do, you probably feel justified in complaining. Being in pain is no fun. But try this instead of griping: Take a break from your problems. Face each day determined to dwell on the positives. Think about what you have to look forward to. Write a list and put it where you can see it. Try lending an ear to someone in need. Be especially kind to people with whom you have only one encounter—a waiter, a taxi driver, a store clerk. You may have only one chance to be kind. When you start living for others, it’s pretty hard not to get over whatever’s bothering you.

Collect Your Blessings.......Recognize all that you have, and finding blessings to collect will become easy. The key to a joyous day? Make gratitude your default emotion. Say, “I can find things to be grateful for in this day.” Let your thoughts be positive. Expect good things to happen. Seek out people who can encourage you. Over time, you’ll find that God’s list of blessings is longer than your list of burdens.Once in a race, I was running next to a 66-year-old grandma. I was about to give up, but she urged me on. “Just hang in there, you’re doing really well. Look how far you’ve come.” I ran next to her and started congratulating myself for all the miles I’d run, not the ones that were still ahead. It worked and I finished the race strong.

Color Your World.......One day I was at the beach, enjoying the balmy day I had so looked forward to. The sand was soft and cool. Tufts of clouds drifted across a deep blue sky. I leaned back in my beach chair and closed my eyes. That’s when a seagull decided to use my chest as target practice. Yuck! I poured water on my shirt, trying desperately to get the stain out. And just like that, I’d lost the color of the day. Almost.Maybe you were caught in bad traffic or your flight was cancelled or you haven’t gotten over that nagging cold. How can you see the world in vibrant color on a day like that? Many of us can’t. There I was on the beach…about to allow one errant seagull ruin my day. I moved my chair, trying to regain the magic of the morning. And then I practiced all these steps I’ve been writing (passionately) about: forgiving the bird (after all, it was only doing what came naturally), not fretting or fearing, counting my blessings (what a beautiful beach) and mostly, getting over it! No, it wasn’t too late for my day to be a joyous one.The world is full of vibrant color. Don’t let it lose an ounce of its luster. Assume this day is going to be good, and it will. God made it so.The above article originally appeared in the December 2007 issue of Guidposts Magazine.

January 8th...Snowy Day

We had a nice snowfall starting late yesterday afternoon and on through the night. The picture I posted yesterday was when the snow had first started but then let up for a little bit.We received about 5 inches of snow.

I took these pictures this morning from our back deck.I love the way the snow sits on my yucca plants and looks so pretty. The sun came out which helped to clear the roads. It was quite windy so the temperature of around 30 felt much colder.

Our Car Shopping Experience

We are the proud owners of a new car.Went and bought it today after lots of Internet searching. Our former car was on its last legs and we knew the day had come to look for a new car.Ken is in the car.As you can tell by the picture it had started to snow when I took this picture. The detailing of the car sure doesn't last long in such gloomy weather.Need to take more pictures of the car on a bright and sunny day and post one again.Whenever we get a new car it is always a tradition to take a picture of it that day so that is why the picture was taken although it was a rainy turned to snow sort of day.

Going to a car dealership is something that neither Ken or I enjoy. How nice to have the Internet to do the searching for us.Ken had been admiring a car that has been on display at our local mall by a local dealership. Not knowing much about the car, our Internet search started. We liked what we read about the car so I contacted the Internet salesman at the dealership. We bought a new 2008 Kia Rondo. They have a few 2008 models that they want to sell so they offered us a great price.

Our Internet salesman was so kind and made this the best car shopping experience that we have ever had in our 35 years of marriage.Knowing what we wanted when we went to the dealership really helped. We got a great deal and was treated quite fairly and kindly.

To celebrate the purchase of our new car Ken and I decided to go to Chili's Restaurant for dinner earlier this evening. We were having a nice meal when we noticed that one of the bosses that we had met at the dealership had come in with his wife.He stopped at our table and once again thanked us for buying the car and shook our hands again. That was so kind of him. Then to our surprise he told us that he was going to buy our dinner. They sat a few tables away from us.When our waiter brought our check the dealership boss told the waiter that he would take the check. This kind gesture has left such a nice impression on us.A new car and a nice meal paid by the kindness of someone else sure has made our day!

Oh The Joys of a Stationary Bike..NOT!

I googled stationary bike and I found this cartoon.I thought it was quite funny and wanted to share it here.
I mentioned getting a new pedometer in one of my previous blogs.Since our weather isn't very conducive to much walking outside I thought I better get back on the stationary bike and convert my time on it to steps.
Wooo....it wasn't easy going. The first minute or two were fine but working up to five minutes was oh so hard.I haven't ridden it in months. So my goal is to slowly and I mean slowly work back up to 30 minutes. It might not be in all one sitting but I want to get in 30 minutes of stationary bike riding a day.One minute on a stationary bike is equal to 203 steps.Riding the stationary bike 30 minutes a day would add 6,090 steps to my pedometer step count a day. That might get me to 10,000 steps in a day.
The Biggest Loser show is coming on in a few minutes.I will ride my bike some during the show.I've been looking forward to the new season starting right at the beginning of the new year.

The Tooth Fairy Visits

We could have used a Tooth Fairy Pillow last night for the visit from the Tooth Fairy.

Grandson Jeremy lost another tooth yesterday evening while spending time with us during his winter break from school. This is the second time within a few weeks that he has lost a tooth while staying with us.

I bought a tooth fairy pillow at a craft show over 8 years ago when our daughter was expecting our grandson. The pillow stayed here until the need arose at their house for the pillow. Now we are without a Tooth Fairy Pillow.Little did I realize that we would need one here.

How nice it is to have a visit from the Tooth Fairy in our home once again. The visits from The Tooth Fairy haven't occurred since our daughters were the age to lose their teeth. They are now 32 and 31 so it has been quite awhile.Jeremy will be turning 8 in April so it has to be around 23 years or so since The Tooth Fairy last paid a visit to our home.Sad to think that I don't even remember how much The Tooth Fairy left our daughters.

I just checked our daughter Kimberly's baby book.To my surprise I noted in the baby book that Kimberly was 5 when she lost her first tooth and a month later she lost her second tooth.I had also noted in our younger daughter Karen's baby book that she was 5 1/2 when she lost her first tooth.

Since Jeremy is a preemie he was 11 months old when his first tooth came in and a little older when he lost his first tooth.

Naticus and The USS Wisconsin

I still have pictures to share from our Thanksgiving getaway to the Virginia Beach area.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving we traveled to Norfolk from Virginia Beach. We were really impressed with Norfolk. It was such a clean city.Granted we were there on a Saturday when it was quiet and that the downtown area was void of people walking around. We went to The Nauticus Museum. The museum includes a tour of the deck of the USS Wisconsin which is in dry dock there. What an impressive and massive ship.Hard to believe that it was in use back in the early 90's.

I took this picture while on the deck of the USS Wisconsin. We got lost trying to find Naticus so by the time we got there we only had about 1 1/2 hours to explore the museum and the deck of The USS Wisconsin.Glad we went but would love to have had more time there.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Happy New Year.Hope the new year 2009 is a good one for everyone.

My weekly virus scan just finished scanning so I wasn't able to write earlier in the day.It is a bright and sunny day here.Such nice weather to start the new year. The temperature is in the 30's.Can't complain about that on the first day of a new year.We had a rather chilly start to the new year since it was down in the lower teens over night.

Stayed home and spent a quiet night at home.Watched a marathon of a show on TV last night that I had never seen.It is Speeders. What a great escape. It was nice to see how the state police, highway patrol, local police or whatever they are called in various areas treat the public.I was wondering if it might have been because they were on camera or if that was their actual mode of operation.Any way,it was fun just to sit and watch the marathon of Speeders shows.Funny how some of the ones that are stopped tell the cops one thing about their previous offences but after the cop runs a report it is a different story. One guy mentioned that he had actually gotten stopped 4 times within a week for speeding. That should tell the guy to slow down!

Thinking back on it I was wondering if I was enjoying the show so much after my encounter with one of our town's police a few weeks ago.I believe I wrote about it on my blog.Just in case I didn't here is the story.I was driving down one of our local two lane city streets.I had noticed that a local cop had pulled over a car on the other side of the road.I wasn't speeding so thought nothing of it.The next thing I knew I saw the police car make a turn around in the middle of the road and coming my direction.I pulled over thinking he was on a call and needed to get by.To my surprise he pulled up behind me.I knew I hadn't done anything wrong. The young policeman came to our car and was apologetic. There was a bulletin out to look for a car that was the description of our car.He knew that we weren't what they were looking for and apologized.Guess two grandparents with their 7 year old grandson in the back seat did not fit the description.

As the policeman left I wished him a very Merry Christmas. He was so kind.We both had a good attitude regarding the stop. One of my daughters told me after the fact that some people get upset with a policeman for getting stopped like that.Glad I took it kindly and that the policeman was kind to me.
